Service Description: ABOUT THE ZOOM IN MESSAGE WEB SERVICE: This web service contains one layer, Zoom In Message, containing a single polygon with an extent encompassing a worldwide map projected in Web Mercator (Auxiliary Sphere). This layer is drawn at all scales. The purpose of the service is to provide web map authors with a layer that can be customized to display when a web map user zooms out past a threshold scale, with a message instructing the user to Please zoom in to view map features. This service is published with dynamic symbology so that the polygon fill is configurable within a web map.
WHY USE THE ZOOM IN MESSAGE WEB SERVICE: Web map authors that need to limit the visibility of map features at small map scales often accomplish this by setting a visibility scale range on the layer being displayed. For example, a scale range may be set on a layer containing a large number of features so that the features do not display until a map user zooms in past a threshold scale. The effect of setting this scale range is that the layer features are absent from the map until the web map user zooms in past the threshold scale. To reduce potential confusion when the features are absent, map authors can include this Zoom In Message web service in the web map to provide the user with a message instructing them to Please zoom in to view map features.
HOW TO USE THE ZOOM IN MESSAGE WEB SERVICE:
1) Add this Zoom In Message web service to the web map.
2) Adjust the visibility range so that it appears when users zoom out to precisely the same scale that the map features disappear.
3) Optional: Adjust the symbology style of the polygon in the Zoom In Message layer to provide a partially or completely opaque mask layer that appears along with the zoom in message.
An example of the Zoom In Message web service being used in a web map may be found at the EPA GeoPlatform Online.
Security classification: Public. Access constraints: None. Use constraints: None.
